Burj Al Arab closure and renovation

One of the world’s most iconic hotels is shutting its doors for an extensive restoration project, led by the Paris-based architect behind the Hôtel de Crillon.

Jumeirah has confirmed that the Burj Al Arab will close for 18 months to undergo a full restoration, with Paris-based interior architect Tristan Auer appointed to lead the project. Best known for his restoration of the Hôtel de Crillon in Paris, Auer trained under designers Philippe Starck and Christian Liaigre before establishing his own studio in 2002. The approach will focus on refreshing the hotel’s interiors while preserving its original character.

The Burj Al Arab has shaped Dubai’s skyline for 27 years. Construction of the island began in 1994 and involved up to 2,000 workers at peak, with the hotel opening in December 1999. Rising 321 metres above the Arabian Gulf on its own man-made island, the 199-suite hotel is finished in marble, gold leaf and Swarovski crystal, and is widely credited with putting Dubai on the global luxury travel map.

The hotel’s helipad, perched 210 metres above ground, has been the site of some of its most memorable moments. In 2004, Tiger Woods teed off from the helipad to mark the start of the Dubai Desert Classic, followed a year later by Roger Federer and Andre Agassi’s exhibition tennis match ahead of the Dubai Duty Free Championships.

Jumeirah CEO Thomas B. Meier described the restoration as the beginning of a new chapter for the property. “For the last 27 years, this exceptional property has served guests with the same passion and world-class standards that distinguish it from any other hotel in the world,” he said. “This restoration programme will carefully preserve the heritage of what is currently the sole property in our Jumeirah limited-edition collection of iconic landmark addresses defined by design distinction and prestige.”

The restoration will be the first of its kind for the property since it opened. No reopening date has been confirmed beyond the 18-month timeline.
