The DSCVR Culture Calendar for April

Our picks of Dubai’s best cultural offerings this month.

1 April: Journey Back

History, world-class skating, stunning visuals, powerful storytelling — a one-of-a-kind production is heading to Coca-Cola Arena, bringing to life the 18th century story of Anna Ivanovna. Entitled Frozen Love and choreographed by the acclaimed ice-dancing star and producer Ilia Averbukh, this ice show will transport audiences to a world of icy grandeur, where the two newlyweds must navigate the legendary empress’s cruel demands. Learn more here.

5 April: Solve a Mystery

Dubai’s leading murder mystery returns to the QE2 with a brand new show, All That Glitters, looking to the bizarre world of reality television for inspiration. Expect to encounter a cast of dramatic celebrities convinced of their own greatness, an ambitious and controlling director, a long-suffering assistant, and a locked-down film set as everyone has a motive — and no one is safe. Learn more here.

12 April: Celebrate Storytelling

Bringing together the city’s best actors, writers, theatre groups, and directors, Short+Sweet – the world’s largest short-form theatre festival – is returning to The Junction in Alserkal Avenue, this time running from 12 April to 1 June. Back for its 13th year, it will feature a whole host of storytelling formats (monologues, ensemble pieces, mime and more), so expect boundary-pushing performances that put Dubai’s vibrant theatre community in the spotlight. Learn more here.

13 April: Revisit a Narrative

Inviting viewers to interrogate the politics of image-making, A Memorial in Fragments will run at Gulf Photo Plus from 13 April to 13 August, exploring how photographs function not only as present-day records, but also future testimony. The exhibition will present an extensive body of work by the late Majd Arandas, who was killed  by an Israeli airstrike near his home in central Gaza in November 2023. Learn more here.

18 April: Immerse in Art

Art Dubai returns to Madinat Jumeirah, bringing with it galleries from both emerging art scenes and established centres worldwide. Taking place from 18 to 20 April, the 18th edition will feature over 100 exhibitors, including over 20 first-time participants, across four sections (Contemporary, Modern, Bawwaba, and Digital) as well as performances, new artist commissions, talks, workshops and more. Learn more here.

26 April: Feel the Passion

Discover what makes tango so sultry and dramatic as Tango After Dark arrives at Dubai Opera, unveiling the dance style in its purest form all the way from Buenos Aires. Running for two nights, this unmissable showcase will pair glamorous costumes and enchanting music with ten world-class dancers moving to the music of leading composer, Astor Piazzolla. Learn more here.

27 April: Embrace the Fantasy

Take an odyssey through a Hayao Miyazaki-esque wonderland as Dreams of Miyazaki takes over the Theatre of Digital Art. Music and imagination will come to life in an immersive 360º experience as Armenian piano mastermind Gayane Aslanyan takes the stage, her performance transforming beloved tracks from the likes of Princess Mononoke and My Neighbor Totoro into a spellbinding sonic adventure. Learn more here.

29 April: Laugh Aloud

Celeste Barber’s original celebrity parody Instagram account has attracted over 7.1 million followers. Now, the “Australian Queen of Comedy” is bringing her new Backup Dancer show to Dubai Opera, tackling a range of topics from inappropriately texting therapists to her childhood obsession with Janet Jackson and what it would really be like to be Taylor Swift’s backup dancer. Learn more here.

30 April: Swing and Sway

Join the International Jazz Day celebrations at Dubai Opera, where an extraordinary evening honouring 85 years of Blue Note Records – the legendary label that shaped the history of jazz – is in the works. Led by award-winning bandleader Peter Long, this concert will bring together world-class musicians to pay tribute to the timeless music of John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and more.
