Centara Grand Lagoon Review: A Refined Maldives Stay

Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives Review

Centara’s premium Maldivian resort brings contemporary design, strong dining and confident Thai hospitality to one of the country’s most accessible atolls.

Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives opened on 1 April last year, marking a more elevated chapter for the Thai hospitality group in the Maldives. Located in North Malé Atoll, the resort is a 40-minute speedboat transfer from Velana International Airport. The journey is direct and comfortable, with spacious reclining seating that sets the tone from the outset.

This is Centara’s second property in the atoll, joining Centara Mirage Lagoon Maldives on the neighbouring island. The two resorts are connected by a bridge, allowing guests to move easily between them and access restaurants and facilities at both. While Mirage leans family-focused, Grand Lagoon positions itself as the more premium, design-led option.

The resort comprises 142 villas and suites across nine categories, ranging from beachfront one-bedroom villas with private pools to three-bedroom overwater residences with slides into the lagoon. The overwater villas follow a semi-circular layout, creating privacy while maintaining open views across the water.

Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives Review

We stayed in a two-bedroom overwater pool villa. Interiors are calm and contemporary, with soft timber finishes, natural textures and full-height glass doors framing the ocean. A wooden screen subtly separates the sleeping area from a dressing space and desk, while both bedrooms feature en-suite bathrooms with freestanding bathtubs facing the water.

One detail to flag: several overwater villas sit behind a low stone wave-break wall, which can partially interrupt direct sea views. If uninterrupted vistas are important, it is worth requesting this when booking.

The resort keeps its dining portfolio focused, with three main restaurants, though guests can also dine at Centara Mirage for additional variety. Bluefin focuses on seafood in a relaxed beachside setting, while The Club offers a quieter, more refined space for guests staying in premium villa categories. Breakfast here is à la carte and unhurried, served above the lagoon.

Sunset Social becomes the natural gathering point for late afternoon sundowners. Netted lounges extend over the water, where rays and reef sharks are often visible below. On select evenings, live music accompanies the transition into dusk.

Centara’s Thai heritage is most apparent at Spa Cenvaree Retreat. Treatment rooms are cool and minimal, and therapies draw on traditional Thai techniques delivered with a slower island pace.

Beyond the spa, the resort offers a fitness centre, water sports and easy snorkelling access from the overwater villas. The lagoon here is calm and suitable for less confident swimmers, while more experienced snorkellers can venture slightly further out for reef exploration.

Service throughout our stay was consistent and intuitive. Staff strike the right balance between attentiveness and discretion, and there is a noticeable confidence in the way the property is run.

For travellers seeking a Maldives resort that offers strong design, credible dining and convenient access from the airport, this is a compelling option. The ability to access two resorts within one stay adds further value, particularly for families, mixed groups or longer visits.
