The Grammy-nominated electronica music group will take the stage at Dubai Opera in June.
The best music happens when artists shun commercial success in favour of authenticity, translating to a real treat for fans of electronica music later this year. “I made an album without the pressure of selling records,” said Anthony Gonzalez, referring to M83’s upcoming studio album Fantasy during a recent interview with NME. “I feel extremely lucky to be in my position where I can make records like this.”
With Fantasy set for release in March, the Grammy-nominated electronica star is getting busy, touring across the US before performing at Dubai Opera on 15 June. Fans can expect an unforgettable night with some of the artist’s most beloved tracks, including “Midnight City”, “Wait”, and “Reunion” being played live on stage. For the uninitiated, Gonzalez got into music after a leg injury in his teens kept him from playing football professionally.
After receiving his first guitar, Gonzalez and his friend Nicolas Fromageau formed their first band, My Violent Wish. The group recorded their first demo album and signed a contract with Groom Records, which eventually led to the birth of M83 in 2001. In 2003, M83’s second album Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghost ushered in a new era in French music. The duo not only won critical acclaim, but were also praised for their unique and fresh sound in the electronica genre.
By combining synth-pop melodies and shoegaze – a subgenre of indie and alternative rock – M83 has turned synthesisers into instruments that make people feel nostalgic. As the sole remaining member of M83, Gonzalez has continued producing core albums for M83, supporting the likes of Kings of Leon, The Killers, and Depeche Mode on their tours. The band saw worldwide success following the release of its platinum-selling record Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming and has sold out tours at the Hollywood Bowl and Brixton Academy, among others.
“I’m thrilled to be taking to the stage in Dubai this summer,” said Gonzalez. “It’s been a long time coming, and I have no doubt that this performance will be evocative, memorable, and, most of all, fun.
