Nearly two years after it was first teased, the upscale Chinese restaurant has opened its doors in DIFC.
Long before Kanye West famouly used his one phone call from jail to order takeout from Mr Chow, it was introducing London’s ‘It’ crowd to the likes of Chicken Satay and Ma Mignon. The renowned chain of upscale Chinese restaurants opened its first location in the swanky London neighbourhood of Knightsbridge on Valentine’s Day back in 1968, with leading chefs serving authentic Beijing cuisine and creative original recipes.
Now, following a successful launch in Riyadh in October 2023, Mr Chow has made its debut in Dubai, marking the eighth branch worldwide. Opening at DIFC’s Gate District, the local outpost has taken over the space that was once occupied by Indochine. Understatedly elegant in feel, the black-and-white lacquer dining room sets the stage for dishes that are served “family style” to ensure all guests get a taste of everything. Highlights here include the crown jewel Beijing Duck, Ma Mignon (filet mignon in a crispy crust), and hand-pulled noodles (the restaurant has proudly demonstrated the original Beijing style of noodle making every night since its inception in the 1960s).
Mr Chow, for the initiated, draws inspiration from ‘The Emperor’s Kitchen’, a term referring to the cooking spaces inside the Forbidden City, Beijing, where thousands of chefs from different parts of China showcased their best skills to please the Imperials and Aristocrats. And true to the essence of Chinese cuisine, sensory elements seamlessly come together to create the kind of dining experiences that account for the legacy of this culinary insituation — over 55 years and counting.
