Home to a unique take on the sfogliatella pastry, Tonton is located at Wasl 51 in Jumeirah
There’s a new bakery in town, and it’s worth your dough — no pun intended. A brainchild of Basil Yassin, Tonton has officially opened its doors at Wasl 51, filling the plazas of this foodie hub with the intoxicating scent of freshly baked pastries. And true to the entrepreneur’s flair for culinary fusion, the artistry of Italian and French baking traditions meet at this new urban bakehouse.
An array of treats such as buttery croissants, rich coffee choux, and delicately crafted vanilla-caramel mille-feuille are on the menu alongside freshly brewed coffee, but it’s the signature TonTail – a unique twist on the classic sfogliatella – that you’ll want to start with.

Derived from the affectionate French slang for ‘uncle’, Tonton symbolises warmth and comfort, akin to stepping into a sweet-smelling storybook where each pastry tells a tale of tradition, love, and artisanal magic. The inviting ambiance offers a cosy escape amidst the bustling city, perfect for catching up with friends or savouring some ‘me time’ in the comforting presence of carbs. We’re told that Tonton has set out to be more than just a bakery — it aims to be a community hub for pastry enthusiasts, coffee lovers, and those seeking a touch of Parisian elegance in the heart of Dubai.

As for the aforementioned TonTail? It reimagines the classic sfogliatella, a beloved Italian pastry with roots that date back to 17th century Southern Italy. Known for its flaky layers and creamy filling, the sfogliatella embodies a rich heritage and evokes the warmth of childhood memories and the simple joy of a sweet delight. The version at Tonton preserves this tradition while adding a modern twist, making it a must-try for pastry aficionados. It echoes a culinary approach that Yassin has mastered at the nearby Yava, which also resides at Wasl 51. For the uninitiated, this Mediterranean restaurant is rooted in his Palestinian heritage and childhood experiences in Greece, serving the traditional tastes of the Levant with a contemporary twist. Tonton is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 8am to 8pm.
