Gohan is a new Japanese speakeasy at La Cantine du Faubourg, offering a relaxed yet intimate dining experience neighbouring the original venue.
Guests can enter Gohan from the Emirates Towers Boulevard during the day or through an unassuming door between the grape fridges in La Cantine du Faubourg at night.
Small in size but impressive in character, the Japanese speakeasy is a homage to authentic Japanese dining rooms. Traditional materials and joinery have been implemented, creating a palette of warm textures and tones. Like the venue itself, the name Gohan has humble traits, translating as “meal of any sort”, a phrase often used to refer to any cooked rice dish.
The food concept is a take on “elegant street food”, serving a refined menu of skewers, sushi and gyoza that utilise high-quality ingredients and high-end foreign products such as foie gras and caviar.
Central to the brands narrative are the bespoke illustrated artworks that adorn the menus, a recreation of Sugoroku picture-based playing cards. These centuries-old board games often depicted ‘Kabuki’ theatre actors playing the roles of famous samurai legends and other folklore heroes. The 200-year-old compositions were adopted and updated with the Gohan palette and patterns to reflect the interior design.
