Returning to the city where much of it was filmed, F1 will screen in the capital on 25 June, ahead of its regional release on 26 June.
Talk about a full-circle moment. With filming of F1 partially taking place at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last year, the action movie is set to premiere in the capital on 25 June, a day before its official Middle East release. The film, in which Brad Pitt plays the lead role (Sonny Hayes), also stars the likes of Kerry Condon, Damson Idris, Javier Bardem, and Tobias Menzies. Hailed for his “instrumental” role by director Joseph Kosinski, racing legend Lewis Hamilton has co-produced along with Jerry Bruckheimer of Top Gun and Armageddon fame.
F1 centres around Sonny, a former driver who was forced to retire after a career-ending crash. Returning to Formula One at the insistence of his former teammate Ruben Cervante (Javier Bardem), he agrees to mentor a young and promising driver named Joshua “Noah” Pearce (Damson Idris) for the fictional Apex Grand Prix team, confronting his past in the process.
The crew and star-studded cast is expected to return to Abu Dhabi for the red-carpet premiere after filming for 29 days at both Yas Marina Circuit and Zayed International Airport. Mohamed Dobay of the Creative Media Authority called the return “a fitting closing moment” to a project that has made a significant impact on Abu Dhabi’s creative economy.
“Made in collaboration with Formula 1, the movie is a landmark for the sport and cinema, filmed in real-time during grands prix around the world and involving the F1 community, including all ten teams, the drivers, the FIA and race promoters,” reads an official press release. “The new feature film is set in the exhilarating and cinematic world of Formula 1 and will immerse audiences in the spectacle of the most popular annual sports series, celebrating the skill and heroism of the drivers while showcasing the incredible challenge of competition in Formula 1.”
