Italian Film Week is returning for its fourth edition to Cinema Akil in Alserkal Avenue.
To reminisce on the heyday of Italian cinema is to reflect on the work of Roberto Rossellini and his role in the Italian Neorealism film movement, a fact well known by the curatorial team at Cinema Akil — the upcoming Italian Film Week, taking place from 31 May to 6 June, will feature a retrospective of the renowned Italian filmmaker. Returning for its fourth edition, the seven-day event promises to “capture the essence of Italian cinema with its infinite diversity and beauty,” screening nine acclaimed films across the week.
Alongside the Roberto Rossellini Retrospective celebrates his legacy with three of his seminal works: Rome, Open City, Stromboli, and Journey to Italy will be a selection of gender-balanced contemporary films that have garnered huge critical success at festivals such as Cannes, Venice, Berlinale, and Rotterdam. Italian Film Week will kick off with There’s Still Tomorrow by Paola Cortellesi, a story of Delia and her attempts to escape the patriarchy in Italian post-war society.
The latest film by esteemed filmmaker Nanni Moretti, A Brighter Tomorrow, is also on the roster. It explores a movie director’s struggles with his family relationships and his latest film depicting the impact of the USSR invasion of Hungary on the Italian Communist Party in 1956. Fans of thrillers can catch family drama Like Sheep Among Wolves, directed by Lyda Patitucci. Elsewhere, La Chimera by Alice Rohrwacher follows Arthur and his band of tombaroli, thieves of ancient archaeological wonders, as they set on an adventure spanning the realms of the living and the dead and navigating celebrations and solitudes.
Alongside, audiences can embark on an unorthodox love story set between Morocco and Italy in Casablanca by Adriano Valerio before traversing Belarus, France and Niger to explore colonialism in the modern world with Disco Boy by Giacomo Abbruzzese. Tickets to these films, presented in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute Abu Dhabi, are available now. Alternatively, you can buy a season pass, priced at AED 225, for access to all nine films screening during Italian Film Week.
